Frequently asked questions: Groups
What kind of group can I start?
Groups empowers us to make our own support system in our neighborhood. There really is no limit to the type of group you create as long as it is supportive to the special needs community. Before starting a group, check out each category and subcategory to find the right fit for your group. Here's an example:

I’m a parent. Can I start a group?
Absolutely! You are encouraged to make your own group to network with others in your local area, set up a statewide group or even a national group. Locally, parents have created groups as a way to set up play dates and parent social gatherings. You might set up a group for special needs families in your school district or in your county. You are also welcome to start a statewide or national group.
I’m a parent leader for a support group. Can I start a group?
Yes. Making a group is a great way for you and your members to talk daily and share information. Families at One Place for Special Needs can search groups geographically so you will increase your membership as new families find you.
I’m a provider. Can I start my own group?
Yes. One Place for Special Needs is exclusive for special needs families and those that provide support. For example, you may wish to make a group for speech pathologists or math tutors.
How do I create a group?
It’s very easy to set up your own group. First click on Start a group in the Groups section. You’ll be prompted to add a category, subcategory and regional information. Choose the type of membership you would like (Public, Moderated or Private).
Now give your group a name and description. You can add a photo or logo and change the color to dress up your group page.
When you click on Finish, you have the option to email people you know and send them an email with a link to your group. If you have made any friends on our site, you can also send them an invitation by highlighting their username.
What can I do in my group?
You and your members can add events to your group, join in discussions, start a live group chat and post classifieds.

Can I make a group that’s private?
Yes. When you create your group you can select public (immediate access), moderated (requires approval) or private (invitation only) membership to your group. For instance, local disability chapters might want to limit the group to their own members.
If any of your group members posts a classified in our Classified section, it will also appear on your group site automatically. It’s a nice way for people to network and pass down used toys or therapy and educational materials with fellow group members.

How do I use the group chat room?
Your group has the ability to talk live to each other. This is a nice feature that you and your members can use to communicate with one another. Members can decide to meet at a certain time of the day to discuss a particular topic. As a group leader you may wish to invite a special speaker to come talk to your group online. This can take the place of meeting in a physical place or be a nice addition to your regular support group meetings. Your members simply click on Enter group chat room to be part of the live online chat.
