Check out our new Local Resources directory. While working on this project I found many services and programs that didn't fit in the directory. So I've reorganized all the categories and subcategories to accommodate them. Also the organizations and services directory are now one Local Resources directory.

You'll find new sections for Community programs/outreach, Disability and support groups, Independence/transitional services, Behavioral/Mental health services, oral health services, speech and hearing services and vision and low vision services.

The best part of the local resources directory? It's full access to everyone! As long as you're registered you can click on any local resource and get their contact information.

Now you can do a quick search for those who make house calls, offer employment to those with disabilities and organizations who accept tax-deductible donations. Disability group leaders can do a quick search for those who offer meeting space for support groups and others who can speak at meetings or conferences.

Please be patient as we contact organizations to add or update their information.

Several members have asked if they can recommend programs and services. Perhaps you know that your fire department has a special needs alert program for first responders. Your child might be enrolled in a religious education program that he really enjoys. You might want to recommend a hair stylist or restaurant that has gone out of their way to accommodate your family.

Now you can share that information with special needs families. Just click on Add a local resource. Fill out what you know and select "I found this resource and want to share it with others."

It is ABSOLUTELY necessary for you to update your current wish list. And for those of you who haven't done so already, what are you waiting for? The Wish List is your personal alert system for services. Whenever professionals or organizations add services that match your wish list, you'll receive an email about it.

This Wish List has worked out so well for families that I'm in the process of moving that functionality for other sections of the website. Look for that within the next few months.

My son Logan (age 10) is an expert researcher on You Tube.  He finds the most interesting videos.  Here is Logan's web pick of the month:

False alarm – At Logan's ESY program, a student pulled the fire alarm at his school. Logan searched for fire alarm information on the Internet. This video performance shows the consequences of a student who pulls the fire alarm. Apparently Freddy has "guilty" fingers!

Great shirts for different learners. Remind teachers that accommodations do work! Also see our shirts for auditory learners, kinesthetic learners and tactile learners. Find these and other products that highlight qualities and personality rather than disability labels at our Awareness with Attitude CafePress page.
