Giving locallyDear readers, I know that it is convenient to give to the national charities.  They make it so easy for us with their donation card and return envelope. But this year I’m going to ask you to think locally with your contribution.

Think about the non-profits that don’t have the marketing dollars for a massive fundraising campaign. They are right in your own neighborhood providing needed services for the disability community.

They provide information and referral, mentoring, day programming, respite, food pantries, special rec programs, parent training, supported employment, therapy services and more. Manyof these wonderful programs are in danger of disappearing. State budget cuts and the economy have put these organizations into a crisis situation.

So please help these organizations out. It’s easy to find them. In our Find a local resource page, use our quick search for “Tax deductible donations accepted." Let your donation have a positive impact on your own community.

Not in your budget to give a donation?  Why not offer your expertise?  Some of our members could really use your advice on all sorts of disability related topics.  Just click on Find a friend and do a search for those “needing help.”  Of if you need help, you can do a search of those that are “offering help.”

Santa AmericaA great video created by Santa-America to help parents prepare their children to meet Santa Claus.  Santa, who you only see from the neck up (Smart!) talks about his outfit and what to expect when visiting him.  Schedule a personal visit from Santas that are specially trained to work with special needs individuals at Santa-America! Another website called Visit Santa Online lets you chat with Santa via webcam. A good idea for those children who have anxiety issues or are unable to leave home to visit Santa.

My son Logan (age 11) is an expert Internet researcher.  He finds the most interesting videos.  Here is Logan's web pick of the month:

Winter Snowglobe– Miniature people skate and shovel in their little world. Shake the globe with your mouse and see what happens. Watch out for the people eating snowman! From FetchFido

Different thinkers t-shirt

Great shirts for different learners. Find these and other products that highlight qualities and personality rather than disability labels at our Awareness with Attitude CafePress page.

Your quote of the month:
"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."
